Background:

Withycombe Raleigh Church of England Primary School caters for children between four to 11 years of age. The School was established in 1865, when it was built on the site of the old St Michael's Church. The original Victorian building comprises two classrooms, computer suite and a special educational needs room. In 1970, a new classroom block and hall was built. This part of the school is now refurbished and extended, providing four new teaching areas, an early years resource area, a junior library, staff room and administrative accommodation. Since 1990, four pairs of mobile classrooms were added, replacing old temporary classrooms. The grounds are thoughtfully planned to provide an attractive environmental area for science, a pond and garden and an extensive sports field. Recently, work in the grounds has provided the children with a marsh area and a woodland walk, so that its pupils can experience a range of natural habitats. There is also a recently refurbished learner swimming pool and a pottery with a kiln. There is a well-developed tradition of extra- curricular activities, especially in sport and music. In addition to the usual sporting clubs there are many other interests catered for by lunchtime and after-school activities. These include gardening, country dancing, gymnastics club, and a host of musical groups, which include choir, recorder groups and orchestra. The school aims to provide a Christian basis for the education of children by introducing the children to the teachings of Jesus within a community that puts the Christian principles of love and care into practice.
