Background:
The small village school was founded in 1844 and is situated next to the village church. It occupies a listed Victorian building and a more modern extension with one classroom housed in a purpose-built wooden building. Facilities include a tarmac playground leading onto the village recreation ground, and a millennium garden with a large wildlife pond, wildflower meadow, willow sculpture and trees, which was designed by children and parents. The school has active football, tag rugby, netball, cricket and recorder clubs and there is a visiting music tutor. The school has close links with Halberton pre-school, which operates on site. Pupils take part in many charity events such as Red Nose Day and appeals for children in Eastern Europe. The headteacher received a special commendation in the regional finals of the 2000 Teaching Awards competition.
