Background:

Shute school was opened in 1877 as a direct result of the 1870 Elementary Education Act. It was built to cater for the educational needs of the Shute estate workers and the children of the Southern Railways employees at Seaton Junction. The school is situated in a rural area of 'outstanding' beauty. The grounds offer a 'stimulating resource' and include a playing field with adventure equipment, playground, area of astroturf, and a conservation area with pond and various wildlife habitats. The original Victorian building has been improved and extended to offer modern, spacious accomodation. The school benefits from parents and friends who assist with the running of a variety of clubs and extra-curricular activities, which include football, netball, recorder, gymnastics and drama club. The school has competitive teams in football and netball. The school aims to provide a secure, safe and positive environment where all children are valued as individuals, can develop a positive self-image, which helps them to make personal and academic progress.
