Background:
Founded as a grammar in 1658, Hele's school moved to its current site on the north eastern fringe of Plymouth, close to Dartmoor National Park, in 1937. New extensions opened in 1970 and an art block was built in 1983. A four hundred thousand pound sixth-form centre was added in 1995, providing 'excellent up to date facilities, with a new suite of music practice rooms completed shortly afterwards.' The school's grounds include 11 acres of playing fields. All students in Year 10 and above are encouraged to take part in the Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and every student is expected to take part in at least one extra-curricular activity. 'The school cares for the pupils as individuals and value them as such. They are set high standards of dress, work and behaviour and are expected to have an organised apporoach to their learning. They are well supported in pursuance of these aims'.
