Background:

Thornbury is a purpose-built, open-plan primary school situated in a mainly residential area. Established in 1978, it has 'extensive' grounds, which the whole school works on for a week in the summer term. It has a library and two computer suites, while clubs such as environmental studies and a range of sports enhance an 'already broad' curriculum. An art-based week in the summer term is seen as a 'celebration of pupils artistic efforts' and one such project provided 30 large paintings for a local hospital. There are 'close' links with the community, industry and other schools and every autumn a four-week multi cultural festival takes place involving local restaurateurs, religious groups and musicians. In Year 6, each pupil plans and formulates an industry project and companies like British Rail have been involved with past projects. The school also offers 'The Ark', a privately managed childcare and nursery from 8am to 6pm for pre-school children of working parents. There is a 'very strong' sense of community at Thornbury, which has a philosophy which 'embraces the concept of an open door between school and community'. 'Throughout its young history, the school has always held the child at the heart of its curriculum'.
