Background:

Dating from the 1930s, the school serves the 'attractive and growing' market town of Honiton, 'famous as the antiques centre of the South West'. The school has a 'substantial modern extension' and its grounds and woods are 'extensive' with 'superb' views of the Blackdown Hills. From a 'complete cross-section' community, the school manages to have 'high achieving' standards. It is 'particularly recognised' for its music, library and special needs work. Honiton's 'exceptional' orchestra regularly plays at the County Show and the Devon Schools Prom. Honiton also has 'outstanding' drama and choir. Its library is 'probably the best' primary school library in Devon and to 'maximise its use' they employ a full-time librarian. Special needs work is 'widely applauded'. The unit for partial hearing children is integrated into the main school and includes pupils with other disabilities, including Downs Syndrome and Spina Bifida. Sport is 'also good', in particular the cricket team which 'regularly' reaches county finals. Pupils 'enjoy' their 'responsibility' to the comunity and have a number of linking activities. These include charity fund-raising, notably for a leper colony in Zambia, Guide Dogs for the Blind and their link school in The Gambia.
