Background:
Bere Alston is one of the oldest village primary schools in Devon. In 1665 Sir John Maynard opened a school for boys. This building now houses its staffroom, Year 6 classroom and the special needs room. In 1912 a further building was added to the school. In 1995/96 a new extension was added to the existing building which provides the school with six classrooms and a community sports hall. One of the classrooms is now an information technology suite. It also has very good outdoor facilities. These include a large playing field, two large playgrounds, environmental/pond area and a quiet area for children to sit. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered at lunchtime and after-school. Educational trips are also organised to enhance the curriculum. The school aims to provide a warm, friendly atmosphere in a safe, caring environment, where children will be happy and successful.
