Background:
The school was founded in 1904 by the Sisters of the Convent of the Holy Family. It was granted voluntary aided status in 1970 under the auspices of the Diocese of Plymouth. After the storms of 1987, St Joseph's moved to new buildings which were opened in September 1992. At present, 65 per cent of the students are baptised Catholics and the remainder are Christians of other denominations. The school'sees music as a particular strength and has a tradition of musical tuition. Sports are also offered, mainly as after-school activities, including football and netball. Swimming is taught as part of the National Curriculum and the children take part in the local swimming gala. The school is over-subscribed with two applicants for every place. 'At St Joseph's a Catholic School, our aim is the formation of a happy Christian worshipping community'.
