Background:

One of two mixed grammar schools in Devon; built in 1957 in extensive grounds at southern end of Torbay, with panoramic views towards River Dart; serves coastal towns of Dartmouth, Brixham and Paignton, although some pupils travel from much farther afield. New science, humanities, modern languages, technology and ICT provision added since 1997. Purpose-built sports hall built in 1995 contributes to school's 'strong' community sporting links. Proud of sporting and extra-curricular achievements; enjoys numerous county successes in basketball, football, hockey, athletics, netball, chess and public-speaking, with senior teams in several English Speaking Union finals. School choir and band also notable for successes. Combined Cadet Force since 2000. 'Very strong' parental links and support; parent-teacher association recently raised funds for new minibus. Pupils involved in much charity fundraising, notably support for Leonard Cheshire home in Ethiopia. Top 25 per cent of ability range admitted.
