Background:

Torquay Grammar School for Girls was founded in 1915 and moved to parkland on the outskirts of Torquay in 1937. New buildings have been added as the school has expanded. Specialist humanities college status from September 2004. All girls take French and German from Year 7, business studies, drama and dance are among the options at GCSE, and 22 subjects are available at AS/A2 level. The majority of pupils remain at school into the sixth form; they are joined by girls from local and international schools. The school has strong international links with France and Germany, and is associated with schools in South Africa, Kenya and the West Indies. The school owns a residential centre in Brittany which all girls visit. Extra-curricular activities include music (choir and orchestra), outdoor education, and visits abroad (ski trips). The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and Young Enterprise are also available. Torquay Boys' Grammar School is next door and the two schools work together, especially at sixth-form level.
