Background:

Set in secure grounds in heart of village, on edge of Dartmoor National Park, 10 miles from Plymouth and six miles from Tavistock; current school opened in 1975, with four classrooms and a hall which has been supplemented with three further classrooms, a dance and drama studio, ICT suite, outdoor classroom, and swimming pool. Over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place. Emphasis 'has always been on English and mathematics, but not to the detriment of the sciences, arts or sport'; large number of sports awards. Makes full use of grounds and grows traditional local Tamas variety apple trees in its own orchard. Environmental issues are integrated into curriculum; Devon representative in Children's Parliament; works extensively within Europe, including professional development project with five other programmes; another project is developing learning communities across Europe; limks with schools in Egypt and South Korea. French included in curriculum for Year 6, supplemented by French clubs for other years. Pupils can choose from more than 25 other extra-curricular activities, ranging from sailing on Plymouth Hoe to guitar and cycling proficiency; distinction awarded by Education Extra. Before-school and after-school care planned for 2007. Community is 'at the heart' of school activities; supported 'extremely well' by parents and parent-teacher association.
