Background:

Rydon Primary opened in 1987 with nine classes but, with increasing housing development in the area, this was soon increased to 10. A further four-classroom extension was added in 1994. Rydon school is built around a wide central corridor with space for working areas and storage. This area is in constant use by classroom assistants and parents working alongside individuals and small groups. There is a large hall and a room for older children to read to younger children at playtimes. There is also a large sports field and 'extensive' grounds which have been developed for environmental education. In May 1998, following a 'substantial' grant from the Sports Council, the school opened a fitness trail. Extra-curricular activities offered include choir, country dancing, drama, netball, football, cricket and athletics. As part of the village community the children enjoy entertaining local groups with singing and drama and have been involved in maypole dancing and sporting activities, and are encouraged to raise money for charity.
