Background:

Built in 1970, the school is set in a 'rural' village. The buildings include a 'large' hall, playing fields, environmental area and swimming pool. There is a 'very strong' sense of community, with an 'active' Parent-Teacher's Association and links with local businesses. Year 6 children are involved in a Community Awards Scheme, in which children spend time in the community helping the pre-school, the elderly and animals in distress. They also run extra clubs within the school for younger children. Ipplepen is 'justifiably proud' of its 'academic achievements' and claims its 'high' scores are not reflected in the league tables due to a their special needs support centre which accepts students from 'all over South Devon'. These children are included in normal class, and while the school is 'proud of the success' of special needs, they find it 'frustrating' that they are included in league table statistics. The school is 'very strong' in the performing arts, 'especially music and dance'. Notable achievements include being finalists in the Barclays Theatre awards in London. Ipplepen school 'believes in competitive sports' as a result of which there are various single-sex teams. The cricket team have been Devon champions and played in South-West finals. The chess teams have twice represented Devon in the South of England fnals. The school's vision is 'for children to be happy in school, to achieve to their full potential, to becaring and contribute to the community they live in'.
